On June 18th, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) released the names of the six experts on the independent panel to investigate the failure of Edenville and Sanford dams. The Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) did not take part in the selection process; However, ASDSO can confidently endorse the members as experts in dam safety and as industry leaders.

The panel experts are:
    •  John France, JWF Consulting
    •  Irfan Alvi, Alvi Associates
    •  Henry Falvey, Henry T. Falvey & Associates
    •  Steve Higinbotham, Hydraulic structures engineer consultant
    •  Arthur C. Miller, AECOM
    •  Jennifer Williams, AECOM

These members represent broad experience in the analysis, design, construction and operation of dams as well as expertise in determining the role of human and organizational factors in failures.  Each is well respected within ASDSO and the broader dam safety community due to both their expertise and professionalism. Given the appropriate time and resources, ASDSO expects this team to conduct a thorough, reliable investigation.

ASDSO is supportive of an investigation into these failures and strongly believes that investigations into major dam failures are necessary to improve dam safety regulation and engineering and reduce the potential for future failures.
