Abstract/Additional Information

"A profile of the construction of Hartbeespoort Dam built in the year 1923, to supply water for domestic use and irrigation, is presented. After the World War 1, a special provision in the 1921/22 budget initiated the construction of the dam. At this stage the dam evolved from a gravity structure to a varying radius arch structure 59 m high. The two canal systems for the irrigation scheme were supplied by independent outlet workers. The full supply capacity of the dam was increased in 1969 with the installation of ten 2,74 radial crest gates on the spillway raising the full supply level by 2,4 m. The canal system served by the dam is 64 km long on both banks of the river, and irrigates 13 842 ha of wheat, tobaco, citrus and lucerne."
