Estimating Storage Capacity

State dam safety program responses to the following inquiry: "I have a number of low impact ponds/lakes in our dam Inventory. We are in the process of updating the estimated storage capacity for these ponds/lakes. I would appreciate if you would send a request to the State Representatives, asking them what method/procedure do they use and/or recommend for estimating Responses storage capacity, without the use of expensive bathymetric survey. In other words: I have the surface area of the pond, what depth/average depth should I use to come up with estimated storage capacity?"
