Abstract/Additional Information

Soils in tropical regions are formed under hot and humid climates and are subjected to seasonal moisture deficits resulting in a state of partial saturation most of the time. Compacted soils, the bulk material in the construction of earthern dams, and similar foundations structures are invariably partly saturated in their initial state. Engineering problems normally encountered with these soils can be examined within the framework of the generalized state parameter approach. For partly saturated soils in uncemented state, the generalized state aprameter is a convenient form for analyzing the shear strength and compressibility behavior. The involved parameters in this approach are simple and generally obtained in routine investigations.
