Model discussion of pressure fluctuations propagation within lining slab joints in stilling basins
Pressure fluctuations propagation within lining slab joints is one of the main causes of linings damage in stilling basins downstream of large dams. Based on three hydraulic models for pressure fluctuations propagation within lining slab joints proposed in the last 30 years, this paper uses both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation to study the mechanism of pressure propagation within joints. The result shows that these models have the inherent relationship but are adoptable to flows at different stages. The model of vibrating flow may simulate the flows within joints of lining slabs which vibrate randomly within their matrix. When lining slabs do not vibrate in their matrix, the model of transient flow can explain reasonably the mechanism of pressure fluctuations propagation within lining slab joints and the cause of fluctuating uplift generation. The model of seepage is only accepted when the joints of lining slabs are blocked completely. 2007 ASCE.
