Abstract/Additional Information

The article views the required damping for three-dimensional finite element models used in earthquake analysis of arch dams. The values of 8 to 15 per cent are obtained by comparing recorded and computed seismic responses at three large dams. The possible sources of energy dissipation explaining these high values are discussed.
