Abstract/Additional Information

The spillway is one of the most important safety features of a large hydro project, as its functions include the safe passage of excessive flood flows downstream, without damage to the civil structures or any impairment of powerplant operation. How effective are large spillways in economically safeguarding the project, and how can their efficiency be evaluated during their operational life? This paper discusses the experience of seven large Brazilian spillways and one binational spillway which have been in operation from 9 to 42 years.
