Abstract/Additional Information
Failure of the Big Branch coal waste impoundment on Oct. 11, 2000 spilled more than 300 million gallons of sludge into Coldwater and Wolf Creeks, more than twice the volume of slurry released in the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster. Article draws parallels between the two disasters and recounts interviews with 32 Martin County residents affected by the 2000 spill.
