EXTENDED ABSTRACT ONLY - The Bureau of Indian Affairs – Safety of Dams (BIA-SOD), Early Warning System (EWS) is a nationwide network of hydrometeorological dam monitoring sites for 141 high-hazard potential dams that span 17 states and service 42 American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes. The network includes approximately 280 BIA sites and 300 additional non-BIA monitoring sites with a total of 5400 sensors. BIA sites typically include reservoir pool elevation and rainfall observations. The system sends automated text and email messages based on sensor measurements and a set of rules established by the EWS team in coordination local and regional staff. (Continued)
