ABSTRACT ONLY - NorthWestern Energy’s Missouri-Madison Hydroelectric Project is the largest project in Montana and is comprised of nine dams spread over 324 miles on the Missouri and Madison Rivers. Eight of the dams were constructed between 1906 and 1930 and helped the City of Great Falls to be known as “The Electric City”.
Hebgen Lake Dam is the most upstream facility, located on the Madison River just outside of Yellowstone National Park. This dam has a storied history including sustaining significant damage from water surging over the dam crest induced by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in 1959. This earthquake also triggered a massive landslide that caused 28 deaths and filled the Madison River valley downstream of Hebgen Lake Dam, creating a natural impoundment known as Earthquake Lake. Other dams in the system include Madison Dam on the Madison River, and Hauser, Holter, Black Eagle, Rainbow, Cochrane, Ryan, and Morony Dams on the Missouri River.
