Abstract/Additional Information

This report discusses the effects of debris in rivers and reservoirs on dam safety. The report is intended to briefly summarize existing knowledge in the field and to provide a basis for continuing efforts to overcome knowledge gaps.
The report covers the following aspects:
Importance of debris in the hydrological safety of dams;
Debris yield;
Methods for reducing debris yield;
Methods for intercepting debris in rivers and reservoirs;
Methods to reduce the risk of blockage to spillways; and
A brief case description of flood events with heavy debris load or/and dam safety problems.
At the end of the report, some conclusions are presented together with a presentation of potential research activities that may be conducted in order to provide better understanding of the subject and tools for managing the dam safety problem caused by debris.
