This volume marks one of a series of reports on the subject of the impact and mitigation of debrisas it affects hydro-electric dams during flood events.
The overall objectives of this project were: (a) to investigate existing methods of estimating potentialdebris yield, and (b) to investigate the various measures and practices of debris yield management.Debris management can be based on three general strategies: (a) controlling the yield, (b)intercepting debris in rivers and reservoirs, and (c) reducing the sensitivity of dams to debris. Thescope of this project was limited to the first two strategies.The estimation of sediment yield is a relatively mature topic. In contrast, the current state-of-the-artfor estimating the yield of woody or man-made debris is very rudimentary.Debris yield reduction can be accomplished by a combination of structural and non-structuralmeasures. The structural methods can be broadly categorized as: (a) exclusion devices, (b) diversiondevices, and (c) debris removal. A large body of practical knowledge is available regarding debriscontrol techniques. However, this knowledge base is fragmented and only partially documented,which makes it difficult to apply for users.
