Abstract/Additional Information

The safe operation of dams and appurtenant structures is paramount to the communities they serve. Instrumentation is an important tool of a comprehensive dam safety and performance monitoring program that can detect changes that might otherwise be missed by visual surveillance. The objectives of this course are to provide the participants with a general understanding of dam performance monitoring and its purpose; instrumentation and measurement tools, including emerging sensor and monitoring technologies; recommended sensor installation methods and lessons learned; data acquisition system technologies and solutions; planning a dam instrumentation and monitoring program; and instrumentation selection considerations demonstrated through case studies.

Key Take-Aways:
1. To gain an understanding of dam performance monitoring and its purpose.
2. An overview of current instrumentation and measurement tools.
3. Recommended installation methods and lessons learned.
4. An overview of current data acquisition system technologies and solution for performance monitoring.
5. An introduction and guide to planning a dam instrumentation and monitoring program.
6. An understanding of instrumentation selection considerations demonstrated through case studies.
