Abstract/Additional Information

This course will focus on the history, process, and technical requirements of the National Watershed Rehabilitation Program and, more specifically, a review of key technical requirements associated with the design and investigation of dams and spillways following Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) guidance for rehabilitation of those structures. The typical alternatives considered to correct deficiencies will be presented.

Key Take-aways:
• A brief review of the history of the Small Watershed Dam Rehabilitation Program.
• A review of the typical process and steps that must be taken when requesting assistance from NRCS for rehabilitation of watershed structures, including specific modeling requirements, investigation requirements, and other important distinctions that are unique to the design of an NRCS watershed structure.
• A review and discussion of the governing design guidance (TR-60 and applicable National Engineering Handbook parts) that NRCS uses to evaluate a consultant’s rehabilitation design documents, as well as recent/relevant changes to those documents.
• A description of the multi-disciplined approach required to properly prepare a Watershed Work Plan or Supplemental Watershed Work Plan.
• A discussion of NRCS rehabilitation case studies with photos, discussions about specific items that were encountered during design and/or construction, and why those items are relevant to NRCS rehabilitation design.
