Flood Awareness Presentations for Seniors, Northern Virginia, 2015-2019
ABSTRACT ONLY - Prior to the current pandemic four presentations were given to Northern Virginian senior citizen centers about flooding in the home, from streams and rivers, and the topic of dam removals.
Topics presented were prevention of flooding in the home, the National Flood Insurance Program, the benefit of dams, flash flooding, safety around dams, and dam removals. Provided was a handout on these topics and two brochures about, “Dam Awareness for Senior Centers” and “Visit National Park Service dams, levees and, other types streamflow control structures in the National Capital Region” A poster will be prepared showing the different topics that were presented. Also another part of this outreach to seniors was a tour of the nearby Accotink Lake Dam in Springfield, VA wherein the various aspects of maintenance, operation and safety of dams were presented and discussed.
These presentations were given under the auspices of the Prince William and Fairfax Counties Programs and Services for Older Adults.
