Gauging the Effectiveness of Dam Safety Programs

The concept for the project, ‘Gauging the Effectiveness of Dam Safety Programs’, originated with a half-day workshop on this topic in Vancouver on 21 October 2007. As finally commissioned, the objective of the project was to enable dam owners and operators to review and improve the ways in which they judge the effectiveness of their dam safety programs by providing information on the ways in which other dam owners assess their programs, and by then providing an opportunity for dialogue between organizations participating in the CEATI Dam Safety Interest Group (DSIG) program. The emphasis was on the sharing of methods and tools and recognized that there would be a wide variety of practices.
The primary information gathering activities of the project were two requests to DSIG participating organizations for information separated by a one day workshop of presentations and panel discussion sessions.
The project report contains a summary of the primary findings of the project, the two survey results and the workshop presentations. It provides participants with information to review which should assist in improving the ways in which they judge the effectiveness of their dam safety programs.
