Session 21: Engineering a Creative Dam Safety Career
Abstract/Additional Information

EXTENDED ABSTRACT ONLY - In 2023 Mark Baker developed the Dam Safety Program area for the online ASDSO Dam Safety Toolbox. Mark subsequently formed a group of several experienced state and federal dam safety program engineers that met several times between October 2023 and February 2024 to discuss a particular aspect of the dam safety sector: Dam Safety Program Engineering (DSPrE). ASDSO members that participated in these group discussions included Mark Baker, Keith Conrad, David Hibbs, Brad Iarossi, Mark Killgore, Matt Linden, John Moyle, Tom Woosley, and Matt Young. The session will expose a wide audience to the scope and importance of dam safety program engineering as well as the unique management, training and relationship skills required for a DSPrE to be successful in their dam owner or regulator program. This presentation will also set up potential follow-up activities to further industry attention to this focus area. By combining with the career panel we hope to educate the audience about the value of DSPrE and attract engineers to this sector of the industry.
