The breakup of protective vegetation is an unavoidable part of most construction activities, resulting in bare soils that are especially vulnerable to wind and rain-induced erosion. In urban environments, unchecked soil erosion often leads to sedimentation (soil particle deposition) in such downstream facilities as catch basins, storm sewers, and waterways. Sediment may also include soil-absorbed pollution elements that can impair downstream water quality.
