Session 2: Panel Discussion - Probabilistic Precipitation Frequency Tools for Dam Safety
Abstract/Additional Information

ABSTRACT ONLY - Probable maximum precipitation (PMP) is now a common concept for dam safety practitioners and historically the industry has considered this such an extreme event that tying probability to this event was both difficult and unnecessary; the PMP was considered an upper bound used for design and evaluation of high hazard dams. However, as the dam safety community continues to advance into the use of risk informed decision making, there is a need to estimate the probability of extreme storms to inform our risk estimates. This panel will explore the best-practices for estimating probabilities of extreme rainfall events for watersheds along with industry needs and potential paths forward to meet those needs.
