Abstract/Additional Information

Nestled in the heart of York County, Pennsylvania, the Lake Williams Dam is a testament to heritage, innovation, and community spirit. Built in 1912 by The York Water Company (York Water), the dam was initially constructed to support the burgeoning needs of a growing community—providing water for manufacturing, fire protection, and drinking. However, after more than 100 years, the dam faced the inevitable march of time and changing regulatory and design requirements, prompting York Water to embark on a comprehensive rehabilitation journey.

Completed in January 2024, the Lake Williams Dam rehabilitation now serves as a model for how modern engineering can breathe new life into historical infrastructure, blending innovation with respect for the past, all while addressing critical safety, environmental, and community needs. In recognition of its outstanding achievements, the project was named the 2024 National Rehabilitation Project of the Year by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials.
