Crossing the lines on the Nelson Mandela bridge

A discussion about the construction of the new 284m long cable-stayed Nelson Mendela bridge is presented. The dominant visual features and a key engineering aspect of the bridge are four tubular steel concrete-filled pylons. These pylons are mounted on large concrete support cones designed to cope with the high bursting stresses generated by the bridge design.
