Abstract/Additional Information

The use of a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) overlay on the downstream slope of existing embankment dams has become the most widely accepted overtopping protection method. To date, RCC overtopping protection has been used to hydraulically upgrade 45 dams in twenty states. This paper briefly summarizes development of the concept, design considerations, range of dam heights, volumes and costs of RCC, together with maximum design depth and duration of overflow for the 45 completed projects. Performance of RCC when subjected to actual overtopping is discussed.
