Stone Mountain Lake Spillway Replacement

Stone Mountain Lake Dam is located in DeKalb County, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, and within the boundaries of Stone Mountain Park. The park is owned and operated by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association (SMMA) and receives approximately 6 million visitors each year. The primary use of the lake is for recreation, including boating, fishing, and swimming. On August 11, 1978 the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, in accordance with the Safe Dams Act of 1978, inventoried the dam and on February 6, 1978 classified it as a Category I Large Dam structure. In 1993, the Georgia Safe Dams Program annual inspection revealed the need to replace the existing grouted riprap lined chute and concrete control section due to deterioration and aging. Later that year, SMMA requested and obtained approval to provide minimal corrective measures and delay total replacement of the spillway until after the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
