Design and Analysis of Concrete Gravity Dams: Instructors

Guy S. Lund, PE
Schnabel Engineering
Principal Civil/Structural Engineer

Guy S. Lund, P.E. is a nationally recognized dam safety and structural engineering expert with more than 45 years of experience in the design, analysis, evaluation, and rehabilitation of dams and hydraulic structures. Throughout his career, he has focused on the engineering and safety of concrete dams, including gravity, roller-compacted concrete (RCC), arch, multiple-arch, and buttress dams. His experience comprises the evaluation and design of more than 100 concrete dams, as well as the development of new dam designs, remedial modifications, post-tensioned anchor systems, and concrete buttress rehabilitation projects.

Mr. Lund began his career designing spillways, outlet works, and water conveyance systems and has since become a recognized leader in advanced structural analysis of dams. His expertise includes three-dimensional finite element modeling, static and dynamic analyses, nonlinear numerical methods, risk-informed decision making, potential failure mode analyses, field investigations, construction observation, and preparation of final design and contract documents. He has been a strong advocate for the use of advanced analytical techniques to better understand concrete dam behavior and improve dam safety evaluations.

Mr. Lund is a FERC-approved Independent Consultant and regularly serves on Boards of Consultants, Technical Review Panels, and Dam Expert Review Panels for major dam safety and rehabilitation projects. He has facilitated and participated in numerous risk assessments as a subject matter expert in concrete dams, hydraulic structures, and structural engineering, including internationally significant projects.

Mr. Lund is also a respected educator and industry leader. He has served on the Board of Directors of the United States Society on Dams (USSD), published and presented widely on concrete dam engineering and risk assessment topics, and developed technical workshops for USSD, the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO), and the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD). He currently instructs industry courses on best practices and the analysis, design, and rehabilitation of concrete gravity and arch dams.

Jeremy J. Begley, P.E.
Schnabel Engineering
Associate Civil/Structural Engineer

Jeremy J. Begley, PE, is an Associate Civil/Structural Engineer with Schnabel Engineering’s Performance-Based Evaluation (PBE) Group, based in the Denver office. He has over 13 years of experience in structural engineering analysis and design, primarily focused on concrete gravity and arch dams, as well as appurtenant reinforced concrete hydraulic structures working under Guy Lund.
Jeremy’s experience includes stability analyses of dam systems using gravity, pseudo-dynamic, and finite element analysis methods. He has worked on the design of post-tensioned anchor systems for dam rehabilitation and stability enhancements, including applications for concrete dams and spillways. His project background also includes field investigations and repair design for buttress dams, along with recent experience in material science, particularly related to cementitious materials and repair strategies for hydraulic structures.

Prior to entering the dam industry in 2016, Jeremy’s structural experience included residential, industrial process, and nuclear facility design and analysis, providing a broad foundation across multiple sectors.

Jeremy earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University and his Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Structural) from the University of Colorado Denver.

He is an active member of several professional organizations, including the U.S. Society on Dams (USSD), where he serves as Chair of the Advocacy & Awareness (A&A) Committee. He is involved in the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO), where he volunteers as a co-host of the A Dam Conversation With podcast. He also participates in other organizations like the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), American Concrete Institute (ACI), Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI), Center of Excellence for Concrete Preservation and Service Life Extension (P+Ex), and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
