Fundamentals of Reinforced Concrete Design of Hydraulic Structures

Location:

Online

Date:

11/06/2024 - 11/08/2024

Description:

This course is intended as an introductory course for persons who have had at least one course in reinforced concrete design. The course will provide a thorough overview of the fundamentals of specifying the fresh and hardened properties of concrete mixes; the review of applicable codes for concrete hydraulic structures; the design philosophy and methodology of reinforced concrete hydraulic structures; and issues associated with the construction process. The course will include actual design examples of frequently used hydraulic structures utilizing current design codes and guidelines that are focused on reducing cracking, limiting deflections, increasing durability, and decreasing permeability.

The following is a brief outline of the course:

  • History of Concrete
  • Comparison of Codes (ACI 318, ACI 350, USACE, USBR, USDA)
  • Properties of fresh and hardened concrete
  • Types and properties of reinforcement
  • Concrete Mix Design
  • Loading Conditions Unique to Hydraulic Structures
  • Design Examples and Class Problems
  • Concrete Repair and Remediation
  • Joint Treatments, Waterstops, Drainage
  • Construction QA/QC
  • Software Available for Reinforced Concrete Design

Learning objectives attendees will receive from this course:

  • Understand what influences the fresh and hardened properties of reinforced concrete.
  • Learn the design codes and loadings unique to the design of hydraulic structures.
  • Learn how to design a durable hydraulic structure that is resistant to degradation, undermining, and destabilizing uplift pressures.
  • Be able to review concrete design reports, specifications, and drawings of non-complex structures for errors and omissions.
  • Review construction means and methods affecting the performance of hydraulic structures.

REGISTRATION RATES:

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

  • Please note that this course is a multi-day technical seminar even though it is being delivered in a virtual format.  Seminars require attendees to be present each day and to participate in the interactive course.  Failure to attend each day may limit access to future components and completion of the course.  Only registered attendees can access the seminar, materials, and recordings.  Professional development credits will only be recognized for the registered attendee.  Additional people should not be sitting in the course.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

  • A $75 cancellation fee applies to all cancellations.
  • Cancellations must be received by October 4, 2024. Cancellations made after October 4, 2024, will not receive a refund.

PDHS AVAILABLE:

  • 18 PDHs are available for the completion of the course. NY licensed engineers will receive 18 PDHs for the completion of this course.

VIRTUAL MEETING REQUIREMENTS:

  • For this virtual course, you will need a computer, microphone, webcam, and internet connection.  If you do not have the ZOOM Meeting application or cannot download it, you can use the web browser version.  More details will be sent to attendees after registering.
