Approaching a Spillway: Hydraulic Methods and Tools to Understand Spillway Approach Conditions
Join us on Tuesday, February 9, 2027, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Eastern for Approaching a Spillway: Hydraulic Methods and Tools to Understand Spillway Approach Conditions. Inadequate spillway capacity remains one of the most common dam safety deficiencies and has contributed to numerous dam failures in the United States. While established hydraulic methods exist for spillway design, the influence of reservoir and approach flow conditions on spillway performance is often underappreciated or difficult to quantify. Site-specific factors such as spillway location, flow approach angle, approach depth, reservoir bathymetry, channel alignment, and abutment geometry can significantly affect overall hydraulic behavior.
This webinar examines how hydraulic approach conditions influence spillway performance and provides practical guidance for identifying and evaluating conditions that may adversely affect spillway capacity and operation. Participants will gain an understanding of common analytical tools and methods used to assess spillway approach hydraulics. Real-world case studies are used to illustrate how approach conditions have influenced project outcomes and how engineering judgment can be applied when standard design assumptions may not adequately represent site-specific conditions.
Through case studies and lessons learned from actual projects, participants will evaluate potential design modifications that can improve spillway approach hydraulics and explore how advanced techniques such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and physical hydraulic modeling can be used to assess complex flow conditions. Discussion will focus on recognizing situations where higher-order analyses may be warranted, understanding the limitations of available evaluation methods, and assessing whether spillway studies have adequately considered approach hydraulic conditions. The webinar provides an introductory framework to improve confidence in spillway approach performance evaluations and support informed dam safety decision-making.
Key Takeaways:
- Recognize what site-specific approach conditions might affect a spillway’s performance.
- Develop an understanding of common analysis tools and methods used to design and assess a spillway approach channel.
- Identify when higher-order analysis methods may be required to evaluate a spillway’s performance due to complex approach conditions.
- Evaluate potential design modifications that can improve spillway approach hydraulics.
- Assess whether a spillway evaluation has adequately considered approach hydraulic conditions.
