The cone penetrometer (CPT) or piezocone is a common field testing tool to characterize soil deposits. It can be used in earth embankments and foundation soils. The piezocone has evolved into a very practical tool for soil profiling and is very effective in understanding soil behavior. One of the advantages is that there is no need for drilling, and it is limited to soil deposits that are penetrable. This tool continuously shears the ground and records at least three channels: tip resistance, side resistance, and pore water pressure; and the combination of these three channels is used to characterize the ground. This webinar will introduce this tool and link it to the soil mechanics behaviors and its applications in earth dam engineering.
