Spillway Erodibility Investigation & Analysis

This hands-on seminar offers an in-depth understanding of earthen spillway design and erosion issues critical for engineers and professionals across the dam safety community. The seminar includes engaging sessions that delve into the mechanics and dynamics of spillway erosion, fostering a comprehensive grasp of analysis, investigation, and mitigation strategies. Participants will benefit from expert-led discussions, interactive presentations, and case study reviews covering key topics such as understanding erosion mechanisms, determining critical erodibility parameters, conducting a field evaluation, O&M considerations, and analyzing earthen spillways with a variety of tools, like the NRCS WinDAM C software. Additionally, the course features hands-on activities and real-world scenarios to allow participants to immediately apply their skills during the course in a collaborative learning environment.

Learning objectives attendees will receive from this course:

  • Understand relevant factors associated with soil and rock erosion mechanisms.
  • Learn about contributing features that lead to unlined spillway erodibility failure modes.
  • Learn how to apply field investigation procedures, including visual observations and subsurface exploration.
  • Understand considerations for earth spillway design, operation, and maintenance, as well as erosion mitigation strategies.
  • Learn about the application of erodibility analysis tools such as the NRCS WinDAM C software, including the development of key erodibility parameters.
