Article discusses recent historic use and primary engineering concerns and benefits in lining, backfilling and operating depleted open-pit mine excavations for containment of solid waste, tailings and ore heap fills. Cited projects include El Valle mine pit in northern Spain, a geomembrane-lined mine pit backfilled with conventional tailings; an above-ground lined tailings impoundment contained by a compacted earthfill dam embankment in South Carolina; mine pits in Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona.
