concrete was used to build the dam. It is 1080m long and 92m high. Total water capacity of the reservoir is 10800 Mm

. Due to historic reasons of the construction period, the dam has several major defects; (1) a vast amount of low-strength concrete; (2) the low anti-seismic capability against 8 degree earthquake intensity; (3) the inadequate flood control precautions against the standard of "one-time per ten-thousand years"; (4) the serious aging of concrete, etc. When a flood discharge took place in August 1986, the spillway dam about 1000m

was destroyed. After 1986 flood season till 1997 for 12 years, a comprehensive renovation and consolidation project was carried out, which includes large-scale grouting and anchoring engineering, concrete and bituminous concrete pasting engineering on the upper side and concrete pasting engineering on the lower side of the dam. Moreover, the top of dam was raised by 1.2m. This is the largest and longest-term project for the renovation and consolidation of old dams in China. The safety state of the dam is greatly improved after renovation. This practice could provide successful experiences for other similar projects. 4 pp.
