Abstract/Additional Information

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has responsibilities for many dams throughout the United States. It is very common for these dams to be included in a variety of computer modeling studies. The detail of these studies can range from general to detailed dam breach and floodplain inundation. The Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) of the USACE has developed software to assist the engineering community in modeling dams. This paper will discuss the use of HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Modeling System), HEC-RAS (River Analysis System) and Geo-RAS (Geographic River Analysis System) to build models to simulate reservoir operations, dam failures and floodplain inundation. Current USACE guidance will be discussed along with Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) development, Dam breaching analysis, unsteady flow routing, hydrologic versus hydraulic routing and flood inundation mapping. 15 pp., 13 figures, 8 references.
