Abstract/Additional Information

The latest release of HEC-RAS (v5.0) adds new two-dimensional modeling capabilities, as well as RAS Mapper enhancements for presentation of the simulation results. The HEC-RAS two-dimensional module is able to use either structured or unstructured grid cells. This approach allows the model to represent terrain features accurately with relatively large cell sizes, reducing computational demands and model run times. This presentation will provide an overview of those new program features and show case examples of dam breach analyses using this new software. The presentation will also show case examples of the consequence mapping, inundation animations showing depth and velocity results, and detailed output at critical locations. The results presented will also be compared to results obtained using other modeling software.
The presentation will also review some of the critical considerations when using HEC-RAS 5.0 for breach consequence mapping relative to topographic data sources, boundary conditions, and use of new breach progression methods.
