Abstract/Additional Information

Abstract - Completed in 1984, Quail Creek Dike failed on January 1, 1989. Problems manifest shortly after filling began in the spring of 1985 with seepage appearing along the downstream toe of the 78 foot tall, 1980 foot long dike. Remediation measures, including blanketing and grouting, were undertaken and considered successful. However, continued erosion of overburden and embankment materials into untreated foundation joints and fractures led to a breach 300 feet wide and 80 feet deep with an estimated 25,000 acre-feet released downstream.
