Fairmount Dam, built on the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia in the between 1819-1821, was the finest example of its time for major urban waterworks in the U.S. Captain Ariel Cooly took charge of the project, noted for its outstanding technical and aesthetic design. Article describes original structure and later modifications.
