Abstract/Additional Information

The finite element method (FEM) of analysis is a proven tool for the analysis of concrete dams and hydraulic control structures. Advances in computer hardware and software allow ever more complex analyses to be undertaken, which provides greater insight into the behavior of a given structure. This frequently enables the dam safety engineer to trim the conservative assumptions that are necessitated by more simplified methods of analysis. Being able to more closely define the behavior of a structure with these advanced methods can pay dividends to the owners, for whom more economical upgrades and rehabilitation options can be developed.
