Hawaii dam inspections

At the request of the State of Hawaii, the Honolulu District USACE assembled teams of geotechnical engineers and geologists from various Districts and other elements to perform limited visual inspections of over 80 earth dams on the Islands of Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Hawaii, and Molokai. The first phase of inspections was conducted in March-April 2006, following over a month of heavy rains which led to the failure of Kaloko Dam on Kauai and the deaths of eight people. The second phase of inspections of the same dams followed the October 15, 2006 6.7/6.0 earthquakes which hit near Kona, Hawaii. Corps geotechnical specialists reinspected the entire inventory of dams, including additional assessments for earthquake damages. 4 pp.
