Hydraulic gates are a real asset to reservoir operations. They are easy to operate, reliable and have little maintenance. The engineer's design calculations are simplified. Yet, every dam inspector looks at one with fear in their mind, caused by stories and experiences of system malfunctioning. Whenever I encounter a hydraulic gate installation, I check the system construction. Mostly, to determine if the necessary components have been included. All to often, they are missing. This sends chills down my back at the problems that exist and will occur. Most are basic systems consisting of reservoirs, hand pumps, directional valve and hydraulic tubing. CONT.
