Karahnjukar: The key to iceland's economic diversity

The developments done on the karahnjukar hydroelectric power project are discussed. The project is the largest heavy construction project underaken in Iceland including 193 m-high, 9×10⁶ m³ embankment located at the head of the Hafrahvammagljufur Gorge. A second 1 km² reservoir, Ufsarlon, and diversion works on the Jokulsa 1 Fljotsdal river increases the yield to maximize power production. The environmental aspects and the measures that have been taken to withstand the extreme temeprature conditions are also discussed.
