Abstract/Additional Information

Abstract Only - The Kubaka Gold Mine is an open pit mine located in the sub-arctic mountains of the Russian Far East. Its tailings facility is built on permafrost, and incorporates a geomembrane lined dam keyed into permafrost to prevent process solutions from entering the environment.
This paper outlines the design concepts, surveillance methods, and management decisions associated with successful operation of the facility. In particular, the design feedback loop utilized to respond to adverse climate and operating factors during the first year of operations is discussed.
