Kyle Dam Modifications - RCC Service Spillway
This paper will present design concepts and construction methods used for constructing a rollercompacted concrete (RCC) spillway. The spillway at Kyle Dam was designed to act as a combination service and emergency spillway, incorporating a base structure of RCC with key elements of the spillway constructed of reinforced concrete. The paper will also briefly discuss other dam safety modifications made to the facility.
The modifications made to Kyle Dam were not unique or overly complex. However, several factors, including the site geology, economic constraints, and the remote location of the work created challenges for the design team and construction Contractor. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the more innovative design approaches and construction techniques used, for the benefit of future projects of a similar nature.
