Abstract/Additional Information

According to the USACE, during the 1993 Mississippi River flood, 157 of the 193 Corps levees prevented rivers from flooding about 1 million acres and about $7.4 billion in flood damages. Another 32 levees withstood floodwaters until they overtopped and 4 more levees were breached or allowed water into protected areas. USACE estimated the damage caused by overtoppping and breaching of these levees to be about $450 million.
