Abstract/Additional Information

The State of Nevada produces two thirds of the gold output of the United States which itself is the second largest gold producing nation in the world.

The tails produced from the milling of these precious metal operations have to be stored in facilities which meet stringent safety and environmental requirements.

In many cases, the challenges imposed by the design, construction and operation of tailings dams are more demanding than for conventional water-retaining dams. Certainly, they can be very different in some cases and in others, very much the same.

This paper will describe the progress of tailings dam design over the last ten years and discuss a number of case histories in the State of Nevada. 8 pp.
