Rehabilitation of the Gafarsa dams in Ethiopia

Various aspects of the rehabilitation project of the Gafarsa dam in Ethiopia are discussed. The options considered to enhance the safety of the whole scheme, and to restore storage capacity necessary for provision of water to Addis Ababa are also discussed. It is found that the cost of full rehabilitation of Gafarsa III, per cubic meter of the reservoir capacity, is five times higher than for full rehabilitation of the Gafarsa I and II. As the rehabilitation options for Gafarsa III are exactly the same, a comparison is made only for Gafarsa I and II, and more precisely for different spillway types.
