Rehabilitation of Lake Lenape Dam
Abstract Only - A case study of the rehabilitation of the Lake Lenape Dam will be presented. This historic dam, built in the late 1800's, is located in Mays Landing, New Jersey. The dam consists of a 17-foot high, 1,000-foot long earth embankment and a 120-foot long uncontrolled masonry spillway. Three 48-inch diameter low level outlets are located in the spillway. Due to the proximity of downstream residences and a municipal roadway, the dam is classified as a high hazard dam.
The dam is jointly owned by Atlantic County and Hamilton Township, and is used principally for recreational purposes. The cost of the rehabilitation is being shared by the co-owners and the State of New Jersey. The New Jersey Dam Safety Section is administering a 50 percent matching grant under the state• s $15 million Dam Restoration Grant Program. These grants were made possible by the Natural Resources Bond Act of 1980 and are available for the restoration of state, county and municipally owned high hazard dams.
