Abstract/Additional Information

The engineering manual Retaining and Flood Walls from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers provides guidance for the safe design and economical construction of retaining walls and inland and coastal flood walls. Retaining walls are defined as any wall that restrains material to maintain a difference in elevation. Only those retaining walls subjected to hydraulic loadings such as flowing water, submergence, wave action, and/or severe climatic conditions are considered in this manual. Flood walls are defined as any wall having as its principal function the prevention of flooding of adjacent land. Besides discussing such issues as design considerations, forces, structural stability, and foundation analysis, the appendices present derivations of a variety of relevant equations.
