Abstract/Additional Information

Maintaining the appropriate level of security awareness is an important component of dam owners and operators’ overall security program. It enhances general situational awareness, improves vigilance, and better informs decisions regarding protective strategies as it can further the knowledge of potential consequences associated with manmade incidents. Moreover, security awareness can contribute to enhanced resilience of the facility, thus helping ensure its continuity and productivity even during times of distress. What is the right size of a security awareness program? What are the most effective tools that can be implemented on the facility and its organizational structure? This paper discusses basic security awareness concepts, including some elements that must be considered as part of an overall security program including surveillance and detection, suspicious activities, and incident reporting. 7 pp.
