Vajont Dam: A Tragedy in the Italian Alps [50th: Vajont Dam in Italy]
This paper briefly describes events surrounding the Vajont landslide of 1963, and is submitted for the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) annual conference, Dam Safety 2013, in conjunction with the Dam Failure and Incidents Committee, anniversary series. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Vajont tragedy, one of the most deadly known dam incidents, and a unique case study that can offer valuable lessons to be learned. Significant research has been conducted on Vajont Dam, especially with respect to the geologic features of the landslide. Here, an overview of previous research is provided, along with a timeline leading up to the landslide, an analysis of the warning issued prior to the landslide, and the consequences resulting from downstream flooding.
