Abstract/Additional Information
Less than 1% of Earth's water is fresh; wise management of this supply is crucial. Most of the approximately 80,000 dams in the U.S. are multipurpose, aiding in flood control, and supplying water for irrigation, consumption, recreation, and hydropower. Adverse environmental effects of dams can be mitigated through good planning and design.
Dams cited:
Hoover (AZ, NV) - hydropower, water supply
Parker (AZ, CA) - water supply
Mount Morris (NY) - flood control during Tropical Storm Agnes, 1972, possible prevention of $210 million in flood damages
