In 1945 a monograph, submitted as a doctoral dissertation in the Department or Geography at the University of Chicago, entitled "Human Adjustment to Floods: A Geographical Approach to the Flood Problem in the United States" by Gilbert White was printed by the University of Chicago Press and privately distributed by the University of Chicago Libraries and by the author. In it the author essayed nothing less than a comprehensive theory of the geographic approach to the problem of dealing with floods.
