Basic Soil Mechanics Related to Earth Dams

Location:

Online

Date:

07/16/2024 - 07/19/2024

Description:

The objective of this course will be to provide a comprehensive presentation of the significant principles and concepts of soil mechanics to the participants. The material will be presented with emphasis on the basic soil mechanics principles prerequisite to further study for the design or rehabilitation of earth embankment dams. This is a basic-level course intended as an introduction for those with minimal to moderate knowledge or experience in the application of soil mechanics principles to earth dam design, operation and rehabilitation.

This course is a good prerequisite to the more advanced ASDSO seminars on Stability Analysis of Embankment Dams and Seepage Through Earth Dams.

Key takeaways attendees will receive from this course:

  • The significant basic concepts and principles of soil mechanics prerequisite to further courses related to the use of soil mechanics principles for earth embankment design and rehabilitation.
  • The theory of consolidation related to embankment dam engineering.
  • The concepts of soil shear strength related to embankment dam engineering.
  • The concepts of lateral earth pressure needed for hydraulic structure applications.
  • A Basic understanding of phreatic surface, embankment permeability, and drainage systems.
  • Appropriate field investigation techniques needed to evaluate foundation conditions for design, and rehabilitation of embankment dams.
  • Appropriate field and insitu testing procedures for existing or new embankment dams.

Registration Rates:

Cancellation Policy:

  • All cancellations are subject to a $75 administrative fee.
  • Cancellations must be received by July 5, 2024. Cancellations made after July 5, 2024, will not receive a refund.

PDHs Available:

  • 23 PDHs are available for the completion of the course. NY licensed engineers can receive up to 23 PDHs for the completion of this course.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

  • Please note that this course is a multi-day technical seminar even though it is being delivered in a virtual format.  Seminars require attendees to be present each day and to participate in the interactive course.  Failure to attend each day may limit access to future components and completion of the course.  Only registered attendees can access the seminar, materials, and recordings.  Professional development credits will only be recognized for the registered attendee.  Additional people should not be sitting in the course.

VIRTUAL MEETING REQUIREMENTS:

  • For this virtual course, you will need a computer, microphone, webcam, and internet connection.  We will use the ZOOM Meeting platform along with the ASDSO Learning Center for this event.  If you do not have the ZOOM Meeting application or cannot download it, you can use the web browser version.  More details will be sent to attendees after registering.
